From film and television director, cinematographer, and special effects creator Byron Haskin (1899-1984), this American sci-fi retelling of the classic novel by Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) features a cast of only three: Adam West (1928-2017), Paul Mantee (1931-2013), and Victor Lundin (1929-2013), along with Mona the Monkey. Despite its moderate budget, this was one of the most visually striking science fiction films of its day. With the Death Valley locations, Winton C. Hoch's (1905-1979) lovely Techniscope cinematography, Lawrence W. Butler's (1908-1988) special effects, and Albert Whitlock's (1915-1999) handsome matte paintings all combining to create a very real sense of a barren and environmentally hostile alien planet.

In the not-too-distant future, a two-manned spacecraft is forced to take evasive manoeuvers to avoid a large meteor. The ship cannot hold altitude after altering its trajectory so the crew eject from the vessel, making a crash landing on Mars. Only Commander Christopher 'Kit' Draper (Paul Mantee) and the ship's monkey Mona survive. His commanding officer, Colonel Dan McReady (Adam West), is killed in the collision. Draper leaves the wreckage behind and, with Mona in tow, proceeds to find shelter, setting up camp in a cave. He assesses his situation, takes stock of his supplies and begins to determine his needs. He finds rocks that burn, later discovering that they give off oxygen. Mona discovers pools of water in the cave, which also provide edible plants. But over time, the isolation begins to take its toll. When alien spacecrafts arrive and begin blasting the surface so slaves can mine for minerals, one escapes and flees to the cave. Draper is relieved to find another person to converse with so helps the slave, whom he names 'Friday (Victor Lundin), hide from their watchful eye until they depart. Over time, Draper teaches him English, and the two begin to form a friendship. When a meteor hits, causing a rain of black ash, Friday saves Draper from being smothered. When the aliens return to recapture Friday, the two flee deeper into the caves. Exhausted and lacking water, they press on, eventually making their way out and reaching a polar ice cap. It's here Draper picks up a radar blip, but is it the returning aliens, or an earth rescue mission...

The extraordinary musical score was composed by Nathan Van Cleave, who first launched himself into the science fiction genre with his score for Haskin's 'Conquest of Space (1955). Throughout his career he exhibited a special proclivity for enhancing both the fantasy and the humanity of outer-space drama. For most of its length, this film is a one-man show in which the music serves as an additional character to keep the story lively and moving forward. Van Cleave's score benefits the film immensely, and it is exceptionally well-orchestrated, mostly by Fred Steiner (1923-2011). The modest orchestra of twenty-four players (including two electronic organs) is used to create a vast array of fascinating timbres that manage to capture all the colours and moods of the harsh Martian terrain as well as the hopes and frustrations of the stranded hero. Simultaneously foreboding and triumphant... Nathan Van Cleave began his career in New York City as a jazz trumpeter and big band arranger. He joined the staff of CBS radio in 1935 and came to Hollywood a decade later to begin working as an arranger and orchestrator for Paramount. There he began scoring features (initially uncredited) and eventually expanded into television work. In addition to work on 'Gunsmoke, 'Perry Mason and 'I Spy, he scored twelve episodes of 'The Twilight Zone, more than any other single composer.
