Sielulintu (Soul Bird) is an original composition by Finnish pianist, conductor and composer Olli Mustonen originally thought for harpsichord. Here's its story:

«Some years ago, my sister, Elina, approached me concerning a very interesting concert and recording project she was planning. Her idea was to compose a programme of music inspired by birds and she was wondering if I might be interested in composing something suitable for that. I found all that immediately very inspiring, for many reasons. First of all, I wanted to write something for my dear sister, who has been such an important person in my life. Also, birds have always fascinated me - in our northern country the arrival of migrating birds in springtime is always one of the great spectacles of nature. And writing for harpsichord was something that, of course, would be very natural for me, also because of my background.

Instead of a bird that can be found in a guidebook for ornithologists, I started thinking of Finnish mythology and the concept of sielulintu, a soul bird. It was believed that the soul of a person was brought by a bird at the time of birth, and taken away by a bird at the time of death. I found all this very beautiful, uplifting and inspiring.

Many of my works have been inspired by our ancient mythology, poet singers and the Kalevala, our national epic. As the poet singers of Karelia were singing about the lives of the ancient heroes appearing in Kalevala, they were also singing about their own lives - being at the same time part of a stream of an ancient tradition, joining a chain of generations since the dawn of humanity, and at the same time creating something that is alive now, touching lives of people living today. »
