ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
An excerpt from JazzLand, the mythical TV show by Lucien Malson and Jean-Christophe Averty, this recording of Erroll Garner is worth its weight in surprises. Broadcast in 1973, the program begins with an interview with Frank Ténot, during which the American pianist evokes his gift for music with humility (Erroll Garner didn’t read music theory), his taste for great jazz ensembles and his studio work techniques.
A real pièce de résistance, the half-hour concert reveals a composer at the top of his art. The two versions of ""Misty"" are unanimously appreciated, all the more so since the track was also the main theme of Play Misty For Me, a film directed two years earlier by Clint Eastwood. Other highlights, the ""Afinidad"" and ""All The Things You Are"" unveil the sophisticated playing of the Pittsburgh native. Finally, the cover of the Beatles' famous ""Something"" imposes a devilishly elegant touch on proceedings. An interpretation to be placed on the same level as the re-arrangements by Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald.
