On December 30, the Church commemorates St Sabinus, Bishop of Assisi, and his holy companions, martyrs under the brutal persecutions of Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century.

During the year A.D. 303–304, the cruel edicts against Christians were enforced across Italy. St Sabinus, Bishop of Assisi, along with members of his clergy, was arrested and imprisoned. When Venus, governor of Etruria and Umbria, arrived, Sabinus boldly confessed the Christian faith. As punishment, his hands were cut off, and his deacons Marcellus and Exuperantius were scourged, beaten with clubs, and torn with iron nails—dying gloriously for Christ.

Through divine grace, St Sabinus is said to have healed a blind boy and even restored the eyesight of the governor Venus himself. Moved by this miracle, Venus converted to Christianity and was later beheaded for the faith. Sabinus, however, would also face martyrdom—beaten to death with clubs under Venus’ successor, Lucius, at Spoleto.

St Gregory the Great later wrote of a chapel built in St Sabinus’ honor, housing relics obtained from St Chrysanthus, Bishop of Spoleto. His relics were eventually translated to Faenza, where devotion to this martyr-bishop continued.

Father Alban Butler concludes with a profound meditation on the vanity of the world, the illusion of earthly happiness, and the eternal wisdom revealed by the martyrs—souls who saw clearly that creatures cannot give rest, and that only eternity satisfies the heart of man.

“A soul can find no rest in creatures.”

This reading is taken from Butler’s Lives of the Saints, one of the most revered works of Catholic hagiography.
