Happy 61st birthday Doctor Who! To bring the 60th Anniversary collection to its close, we enter the modern era.

Murray Gold refreshed the theme for the 4th series, debuting in the Kylie Minogue Christmas special 'Voyage of the Damned' with an updated mix for the rest of series 4. The Christmas mix is a lot more raw, with an aggression that was toned down for Series 4 to give it further clarity and let individual elements pop out more. Weirdly, it's the Christmas mix that is always in my mind when I think of the 2008 theme and I do think I prefer it, there's an energy there that gets lost. Even with that clarity, there's a lot of instrumentation that gets lost - all elements of the orchestra are doing something and while that's great fun, it does mean some sections can merge, particularly on broadcast when compression gets applied.

With this arrangement, I wanted to find a middle ground between those two mixes, capturing that raw energy while still giving clarity to the various instruments and highlighting other aspects that may not have been audible originally. Not sure I succeeded but I'm happy with it, its one if my most detailed areangemwnrs (followed only by Gold 2023) and it's always an opportunity to extend it further beyond the officially released tracks!
