Kerala govt informed the High Court that marriage registration can be done online in accordance with the Special Marriage Act. With this, the bride and groom can present themselves online to register their marriage. The explanation came in response to the appeal seeking permission to register marriages online.

The new decision was informed jointly by IT principal secretary Biswanath Sinha, former secretary Muhammed Y Safarullah, and IT Mission director through an online conference. The State Attorney informed that if the High Court intervenes to suggest something further, they are ready to take adequate steps and give a detailed report on this.

The division bench including Justice Muhammed Mushthaq and Justice Kousar Edappagath was responding to the appeal filed by several people including TVPM native Dhanya Martin. While registering a marriage using the Special Marriage Act, there are several processes to be undertaken to identify the person who presents himself for the same. All these need to be followed correctly. The court was looking into the methods for identifying the individuals online. Apart from this, it also sought details about identifying a person through facial recognition and biometric technologies.
