Front Row On-Ride, 4K Ultra HD POV. The Playland Wooden Roller Coaster is World-famous and the oldest roller coaster in Canada. Constructed between 1957 and 1958 under the lead of Walker LeRoy, the Wooden Coaster faced skepticism before it opened. According to legend, a team of engineers inspected the nearly finished ride and said a coaster train would never be able to navigate the sharp dips, bends, and curves using only gravity and momentum.

LeRoy disagreed—and put $100 on the line to prove it. To demonstrate, he strapped a plank onto the wheels of an unfinished train and fired up the ride’s 1923, 75-horsepower Westinghouse motor, the same one still powering the coaster today. Holding onto nothing but a rope, he braved the 90-second journey, reaching speeds of more than 70 km/h, and proved the skeptics wrong.
