I was using the S3 fairly often til September 2023, then I got water in the fuel tank. I'm not sure if it was from all the rain or from contaminated fuel at the petrol station, or from the ethanol in petrol now, even the e5 which I use, absorbing water... but however it got in there I had water in my float bowls and so the bike wouldn't start, i drained the fuel tank and found quite a bit of water in there too.
I have been too busy since to do anything about it and have been mostly riding my 'Calisportia' (v11 sport lemans powered t3 cali) and my Griso 1100 and my Ducati Multistrada since, so I've just had the carbs in a box ready for me to have time to strip, clean and rebuild, and the drained and dry precious s3 tank in my office waiting for me to treat with vinegar or some such liquid to remove the light surface rust inside.
Last night I thought I may as well strip, clean and rebuild the carbs while watching the Portugal Vs Slovakia game on TV.. and because they were now ready, This evening I couldn't resist trying to start the bike.
I hadn't even charged the battery.
It's a very old Exide AGM battery which I put on this bike years ago, as I already had it in my stash from a KTM I'd had years before.
I quickly rigged up the remote fuel supply, took some old fuel that was saved for my chainsaw, not even fresh fuel, and quickly fitted the throttle cables that were still on the bike, to the carbs and the carbs to the bike.
I noticed as I was threading it through the carb slide that one of the cables was a bit rusty and not moving freely so I sprayed a load of GT85 spray lube down the twist grip end of the cable til I could see it start to drip out the carb end.
I flicked the enricher levers up and turned the key into the on position and pressed the starter.
To my surprise it fired up instantly and ran nicely.
I ran it at a fast idle for a while to burn off all the lube that went everywhere while I was trying to get it down the top of the cable, and also to get the oil warm and circulating everywhere quickly before revving it up.
Now I'm enthused to get the tank cleaned out and ride this awesome bike again.
