In episode 154 of Whisky in SV, Ralf and I did a blind tasting of a sample from the latest special release from one of our favorite distilleries, Jack Daniel’s: the Tanyard Hill Rye. These are single-barrel releases, and the sample we tasted was bottled at a hefty 133.3 proof. Given our enthusiasm for Jack Daniel’s special releases—and the hype surrounding Tanyard Hill—we were really hoping it would blow us away. Instead, to our surprise (at least in this particular sitting and for this specific barrel), it drank noticeably hot. In our blind ranking, it finished last, behind a far more accessible Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye store pick. We’re both very curious to try other Tanyard Hill barrels to see how much variation there is from barrel to barrel.
