WE BUY CARS!

A hybrid before the term was widely known, #Ford blended parts from its venerable Model T lines with early versions of its then-new Model A line. This desirable, open-cab pickup dates from May 1928 and is the result of such a blend and a rare, early Ford Model A.

It has many of these characteristics, which include a red phenolic steering wheel, a unique style of hubcaps, left-side emergency brake handle, fluted headlamp lenses, drum-shaped Duolight taillight and the very early Powerhouse generator, a short, squat configuration with the cutout mounted on the side. Accessories include many seldom-seen on Model A pickups, including whitewall tires, a #MotoMeter, running board step plates, driver’s side spotlight, clock mirror and a second side-mount spare with matching wire wheels.

It is one of 23,972 such roadster pickups made in 1928; this example was made in May that year. Finished in Rock Moss Green over black wings with a black, fixed roof, the truck’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with some minor blemishes visible at less than 10 feet. The body is straight and solid and the double-tiered front bumper looks great. The truck’s engine bay is extremely tidy, as is its cargo bay with wood and metal flooring. What really makes this truck pop are the sea green wire wheels; they add a striking contrast to the rest of the exterior.

This truck rolls on Sears Armstrong whitewall tires, size 4.40-4.50-5.00-5.25-21, mounted to those dazzling sea green wire wheels. The wheels appear in excellent condition while the tires are in very good order.

Under the vee’d hood and head of the fuel tank mounted in the firewall is Ford’s 201 CID inline four-cylinder engine. It’s bolted to a three-speed sliding gear manual transmission and a 3.77:1 differential.

Inside, the brown bench seat is in excellent order while the floor mats are in good, original order. The four-spoke phenolic steering wheel is red instead of black and looks good while the green metal instrumental panel with its center-mounted gauge cluster and ignition switch is in excellent order, as are the inner door panels. The handbrake is to the left of the driver while the gear shift is topped with a caramel-colored ball, adding an interesting dot of color in the cabin.

When Ford’s new Model A bowed in late 1927, of course the range included a pickup. Essentially a Model A version of the Model T pickup, it was an open-cab configuration, as Ford called it. The bed was a direct T carryover and was mated to the rear fenders used on Model A coupes and roadsters. The top, although similar to that of roadsters, was fixed in place. Matching side curtains were supplied, but like all early open Model As, there were no outside door handles.

Early Model As had a number of distinguishing characteristics that were phased out during the 1928 model year. These have gained the honorific designation “AR,” not a Ford term but more recently derived by enthusiasts from coding in the parts manual as early items were “Replaced.”

Documentation includes a note from the second former owner to the former about the side curtains and assorted other paperwork.

Competition to this Ford in 1928 included Chevrolet’s Series AB National, Dodge’s half-ton truck and Fargo’s Packet small truck.

There are Model As, rare Model As and models such as the Ford Model AR Roadster Pickup. Ford collectors, early classic truck fans and pre-World War II vehicle collectors would be highly interested in this Ford so plan to stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to look over this uncommon Ford.

VIN: A126026 = engine was made on May 10, 1928.

This truck is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 49,942 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
