Since the demise of the stockyards, Chicago has not been noted for any particular industry. Gary, Indiana, once known for it's steel mills, is now idle. There has been a diminution in Manufacturing throughout the entire Midwest region. Most Chicagoans have been forced to settle for low-paying jobs in the local service economy sector.

Chicago governmental and business leaders missed the opportunity to have Chicago emerge as the primary place for Silicon development and manufacturing. We were too focused on road building and one-dimensional infrastructure repair. Eventually, "Silicon Valley" was established in California.

Nanotechnology, is the next mega industry. Nanofabrication encompasses making things on the nano-scale (10 to 1000 times the size of an atom). Nanotechnology will impact multiple product lines and industries including pharmaceuticals, power semiconductors, information storage, optoelectronic, sensors, micro-electronics and bio-medicine.
