Alison Pilkington: How We Roam
Alison Pilkington was born in Sligo. Her paintings often present a narrative that unfolds through a single motif. Simple half-formed shapes draw the viewer to question the metaphorical and anthropomorphic attributes in the work. The motifs take on a persona and are present within a range of fictional environments in the paintings. There is humour and a certain raw exposure alluded to in these situations and references to the pioneers of the Wild West, to being placed outside one’s comfort zone into a vulnerable place. The idea of artistic freedom and creativity as a journey is alluded to in the works.
Pilkington is based in Dublin and is currently a studio and board member at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios Dublin. She completed a practice led PhD in painting at National College Art and Design Dublin awarded in 2015. Recent exhibitions include: Will We Remember Volcanoes at Westminster Art Library London, Strangelands at Collyer Bristow Gallery London, Contemporary British Painting, a touring exhibition to 4 Museums in China, Sept 2017 to January 2018.
Marcel Vidal: SILVERFISH
Marcel Vidal graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2009. He makes paintings and sculptures and works intuitively with a variety of materials. He constructs distinctive sculptures, which within an exhibition context, stage and frame his fine paintings.
His approach to sculpture is one of assembled chaos and combative insistence; this energy is strongly contrasted by his oil and watercolour paintings which are quiet and reflective. His sculptural works are made with collected and hoarded materials. The sculptures become volatile assemblages, built from hardware materials, strips of wood, zinc plated bolts, castor wheels, spray paint, expanding polyurethane foam, string, feathers, fur pelts, deer hooves and suggest a function. Vidal’s paintings often start with a found digital image which is then re-presented and changed in its legibility. This is achieved through rigorous cropping of imagery which is an attempt to frustrate the viewer’s interpretation. The paintings become intriguing and seem to be withholding information that makes them clearly legible.
