Using an inexpensive "USB to IDE/SATA" hard drive adapter kit and the "USB 3 Camera adapter" for iOS devices, it's possible to connect legacy IDE-based hard disks to an iPhone.

Both drives used in my case are FAT32-formatted and were used on a Windows XP installation. The drive in the latter example had multiple partitions, and those were accessible on the phone.

I did not test writing of files, but reads were successful. The fact this works may not be terribly surprising given there are modern external hard drive enclosures with USB connections, but it was fun to "retrofit" an IDE drive from 1998 and see it work similarly.

A note on the USB 3 camera adapter / dongle: A helpful comment by ‪@MichaelMJD‬ on an iPhone / floppy drive video revealed that "mass storage class" device support (USB memory cards, hard drives, possibly CD-ROMs etc.) exists on the USB 3 camera adapter, but not the "lightning to USB camera adapter" (note the lack of USB-3.)    • Installing Windows 3.1 on an iPhone From F...
