Mercury ProXS V8 225hp Versus Mercury Verado 300hp water test Hitech Marine

Hitech Marine Repowered a Custom Craft 670 Pro Fish with a Mercury Pro XS V8 Outboard 225hp engine in May 2020. Whilst on the initial water test where items like, Propeller selection, engine height, Max RPM, engine load etc. are checked by our Marine Mechanics we were flagged down by a fellow boater.
He had recently fitted (not supplied by us) a 300hp Mercury V8 Verado to his Aluminium boat of a similar size and was watching us zooming past. After a light conversation he asked "Do you want a run?" So we put the 225hp against the 300hp to see how it would perform.
Both boats jumped out of the hole and onto plane very quickly, the lighter Aluminium version with the extra horsepower almost got the jump on the heavier fibreglass Leeder hull, however once planing it was clear that the correctly set up Pro XS was holding the Verado 300hp off and at the top end of the RPM range the Pro XS starting pulling away even with 75hp less.
What this illustrates is the importance of adequate and correct engine setup, along with the appropriate amount of time spent on water testing ensuring correct load, Engine height & prop selection which are critical to the long term performance of your new engine.
At Hitech Marine all engine repowers are water tested with factory certified marine mechanics and all the latest diagnostic equipment.
