Russia and N. Korea to sign comprehensive strategic partnership treaty during Putin's visit to Pyongyang: Kremlin

푸틴, 24년 만에 방북 美 "한반도 안보에 영향 줄 상응 조치 우려"

Russian President Vladimir Putin is heading to Pyongyang today at North Korean leader Kim Jung-un's invitation.
The two leaders are expected to further upgrade their ties by signing a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty.
Shin Ha-young reports.

As confirmed by both the Kremlin and North Korea on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to North Korea on Tuesday for a two-day visit, before heading to Vietnam later in the week.
This is his first visit to Pyongyang in 24 years since July 2000, when then-North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and the Russian leader announced a joint declaration on friendly cooperation.
It will be Putin's third summit with leader Kim Jong-un, following their second meeting last September.
According to the Kremlin, Putin will arrive in Pyongyang on Tuesday evening and hold meetings on Wednesday.
A Kremlin aide said the two leaders will sign several important documents, which may include a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, outlining future cooperation and deal with security issues.
They also plan to discuss issues, including the economy, energy, transportation, and agriculture.
Meanwhile, the White House on Monday expressed concern over Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, warning that it could deepen military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

"Not just because of the impact that it is going to have on the Ukrainian people because we know North Korean ballistic missiles are still being used to hit Ukrainian targets but because there could be some reciprocity here that could affect security on the Korean Peninsula."

Ahead of his visit, Putin said in a letter published in North Korea's Rodong Sinmun on Tuesday, that he intends to elevate relations with North Korea to a higher level.
He added that they will develop alternative systems for trade and mutual settlements not strained by Western countries and jointly oppose their illegitimate restrictive measures.
