For decades, Iowa has wrestled with the challenge of water quality. In the mid-2010s, Des Moines Water Works took legal action against agriculture-heavy counties, citing nitrate pollution in the watershed. The lawsuit ultimately failed, but it seemed to spark rural--urban divide.

Now, with wetter years straining water systems once again, headlines about nitrates are resurfacing. Recently, lawn watering bans were implemented to protect drinking water capacity.
