U.S. President Bill Clinton opened his state visit to China on Saturday.

In a ceremony heavy in symbolism, Clinton met Chinese President Jiang Zemin in Tiananmen Square - the sprawling plaza that remains haunted with memories of China's bloody crackdown against democratic change nine years ago.

Clinton shook hands with President Jiang and other leaders of the communist regime outside the Great Hall of the People before disappearing inside for talks.
