In March 1917, the February revolution tore through Russia, forcing the Tsar to abdicate, dissolving the Russian Empire and creating a new state called the Petrograd Soviet based in Petrograd (St. Petersburg). It was a democratic state in which socialist parties such as the Bolshevik and Menshevik parties were extremely popular. However they did not have the power they needed to take over until the October revolution in November, when the Bolshevik party took up arms, seizing the Petrograd armoury and storming the soviet. No one had stood up when the Tsar was ousted, but now the Russian people were forced to stand up and choose a side. Many chose the side of revolutionary communist ideology, the newly formed Red army, many others chose to be counter-revolutionaries, joining the recently created "White army." The white army was not a unified group, but an ad-hoc army of anyone who was an enemy of the Bolshevik party. Tsarists, republicans, liberals, capitalists, even a few anarchists and socialists who were not Bolsheviks joined the white army. Officially, these two fought until a red victory in 1924, unofficially, remnants of the white armies remained fighting the Bolshevik party for decades, never accepting the fall of the motherland.
