Tridacna Clam Care in the Reef Aquarium: General Considerations for Purchase or Troubleshooting

These are some general considerations before purchasing a Tridacna clam for your aquarium.

The most common clams you will find in the trade are Derasa, Squamosa, Maxima, and Crocea.

Size and hardiness are important considerations.

PAR is one of the most important considerations. DeRosa and Squamosa- I would personally recommend no less than 150 PAR, but less par than Maxoma or Crocea. These species need a lot more PAR unless you supplement. I would recommend no less than 250, and consider placing higher in the tank.

Dosing and stability ARE AN ABSOLUTE MUST. Clams will rapidly deplete your water of alkalinity and calcium.

I would also consider skimming less, or maybe consider ramp-up from not skimming to fully skimming like you do for light acclimation.

Consider phytoplankton supplementation.
