In this MWC 2021 demo, Qualcomm demonstrates how 5G V2X sidelink can offload high-bandwidth data from the wide area network to deliver new and enhanced in-vehicle experiences.

Watch as Qualcomm’s Principal Engineer Arik Gubeskys explains how a 5G V2X sidelink offloads the network to deliver higher bandwidth map data using a local roadside unit (RSU).

Thanks to the map data, a driver is provided with a real-time 3D map featuring local landmarks and potential road hazard information. These 5G V2X sidelink technologies enhance autonomous driving capabilities and improve road safety.

Watch as a 5G V2X equipped vehicle is accurately shown where to make a turn as it approaches a local landmark. Meanwhile, at a distance, another passing vehicle notices a stopped truck acting as a roadblock and a potential hazard. This passing vehicle transfers that information to a map server which then relays it to a local roadside unit, notifying the other vehicle using 5G V2X sidelink that triggers an update to the navigation directions.

Because of the timely updated directions, our vehicle can efficiently switch lanes, avoiding the roadblock. This enables the vehicle to continue to its destination without obstruction and any delays.

Qualcomm is working to create innovative technology that will enable vehicles to communicate with each other and everything around them — providing 360-degree non-line-of-sight awareness and a higher level of predictability for enhanced road safety and autonomous driving.
