Coaches Corner | Stoppies are a classic maneuver that as mountain bikers we rarely need to use on the trail, but when mountain bike instructors and coaches teach these to their students, it can be an incredibly powerful tool to develop braking and stability and balance skills.

As coaches, we tend to break these more challenging maneuvers down into smaller, easier steps. There are pros and cons to every approach, but have you ever thought of showing your students a reverse progression?

This can sometimes help because the last thing the student sees is the easiest step which can help reduce the intimidation and fear aspect of the maneuver. Finding ways to help manage confidence and emotions is a key tool to help our students’ mental skills develop, while also helping to develop their technical skills.
