Gov. Greg Abbott is continuing the long-held Texas tradition of vigilantism. Last week, he pardoned murderer Daniel Perry, a racist who wanted to date a 16-year-old and kill Black Lives Matter protesters.
The former Army sergeant shot dead Garrett Foster, an Air Force veteran escorting his quadriplegic girlfriend along during a 2020 protest. Perry was maneuvering his car aggressively through the crowd when Foster walked up to him with an assault rifle slung over his shoulder. Carrying a rifle like that is legal in Texas.
Perry opened fire from inside his car with a concealed revolver. He told police “I believe he was going to aim at me. I didn’t want to give him a chance.”
A search of Perry’s cellphone revealed racist messages where Perry was itching for a confrontation with a civil rights protester. Police also found explicit texts the 34-year-old and a 16-year-old girl.
Texas history is full of governors, judges and other authority figures excusing and condoning white supremacist violence. The state had the highest per capita rate of lynchings in the nation from 1865 to 1955. Rarely did a member of a lynching party face prosecution.
Texas authorities have always welcomed vigilantes to help maintain power. Abbott’s pardon sends a message: Right-wingers can kill people protesting for human rights with impunity.
