Lord Macaulay’s report presented in 1854 to the Parliament of England made the way for the appointment of administrative officers in India based on their qualifications.
The first exam for Indian Civil Services was held in London in 1855 and not a single Indian went there to give the exam.
“Satyendranath Tagore”, the brother of Rabindranath Tagore, became the first Indian to pass this examination in 1864.
In 1922, for the first time, this examination was conducted in India.
The Public Service Commission was established in 1926. It was later reconstituted as the Federal Public Service Commission by the Government of India Act 1935.
On January 26, 1950, it attained the status of a constitutional institution and was renamed the Union Public Service Commission. The current chairman of UPSC is Dr Manoj Soni.
Every year National Civil Service Day is celebrated on the 21st of April. It was first celebrated in India in 2006.
This particular date was chosen to honour the occasion in 1947 when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first home minister of independent India, addressed Administrative Services Officers.
