Birmingham City vs Bolton Wanderers, R6,

The FA Cup 6th Round - 12/03/11

Kevin Davies stirred memories of Nat Lofthouse as the barrel-chested Bolton striker bludgeoned his team into the FA Cup semi-finals at St Andrews on Saturday.

But the visitors owed as much to their extraordinary goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen as to their talismanic captain.

Jaaskelainen produced the save of the day when he touched a diagonal drive from Kevin Phillips against his right post.

He also made two immaculate interceptions with his feet that served as an example to many of the outfielders on an afternoon of grim tackling.

The first went virtually unnoticed in the opening period, but the second caused uproar as he raced out to challenge Cameron Jerome.

The Finn poked the ball away before the two men collided amid clamour for a rightly denied penalty.

As the only survivor of the Bolton side beaten on penalties by Aston Villa in their last semi-final appearance 11 years ago, Jaaskelainen had more reason than most to celebrate after his 500th appearance for the club.

Birmingham, despite missing nine first-choice players and losing two men through injury in the opening half-hour, played with enormous spirit but equally great naivety.

Manager Alex McLeish said: "You couldn't ask for more in terms of commitment and effort, but we were a bit sloppy and they were silly goals.

"We came back twice and I felt we deserved a replay, but they undid us right at the end."
