(26 Apr 2016) A commemoration service was held on Tuesday in the Ukrainian town of Slavutych to remember those who died in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 30 years ago.
Liquidators, students, and relocated residents of exclusions zone laid flowers during the service held in the town specifically built for those who were evacuated following the accident.
The initial explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986 killed at least 30 people and exposed millions to dangerous levels of radiation.
The final death toll is subject to speculation and dispute due to the continuing effects of radiation.
About 600,000 people, Chernobyl's so-called "liquidators," were sent in to fight the fire and clean up the worst of the nuclear plant's contamination.
They were all exposed to elevated radiation levels.
For liquidators and former workers at the site, the annual service is a chance to mourn those who died as a result of the disaster.
