Episode 8: Job & Work
After more than one year living day-after-day with a persistent and deadly pandemic, we were forced to adapt and handle a new reality. Even daily habits which we do automatically such as working or studying had to comply with new rules and practices. All of a sudden most of those who had a job could not go for work. And those who had to work have no job.

Many of those who were employed became unemployed. The number of self-employed escalated and it became hard to live through their work. Many formal jobs disappeared while informality and inequality continue rising. Industries, commerce, restaurants and shops have been closed and many will shut-down forever.

Globally over 265 million young people (15-24 ages) are not in employment, education or training.
In 2020, under-employment and poorly paid work affected almost a billion people (ILO). Nearly half a billion workers are under-utilized and 188 million people want work but can’t find it. For years the global labor force increases but not enough new jobs are created, during the pandemic this trend worsened.

Home-office became a must. But just for those who have an office and a home. Today, the most demanded jobs can be done remotely. Digitalization opened numerous doors but there are some winners and many losers. Some creative entrepreneurs were able to fast respond to the crisis and grasp few opportunities. A large number of women not only lost their job but also had increased childcare responsibilities. Yet, they are emerging stronger from the pandemic.

Looking to the future almost 40% of workers think their job will be obsolete within five years. Six out of 10 are concerned about machines and algorithms taking over their jobs (PwC’s). As technology, robotics and artificial intelligence are transforming the job market probably half of us will need reskilling in the near future. Humans and machines are predicted to spend an equal amount of time on tasks at work by 2025 (WEF).

Active learning and technology use will be a necessity. Critical thinking, problem-solving, self-management, resilience, creativity, flexibility and initiative will be essential job skills in the post-pandemic world. The big challenge will be to rebound better… reducing skills gaps and making workplaces more inclusive and open for embracing diversity.
