Requirements Quality in 3 Steps

Textual requirements, at different levels of abstraction, are a key aspect of every systems engineering project. In this video I will show you how to succeed in this discipline in just 3 steps, improving overall quality, and saving time and money.
First, agree on a catalog of rules for high-quality requirements. Choose between well-known catalogs such as the one defined by the INCOSE Guide to Writing Requirements, the ECSS followed by ESA, BABoK, and NASA. But make sure you can tailor those rules to your specific needs, to the level of abstraction of your requirements document, the demand from your customer or partners...
A tool like RQA - QUALITY Studio, allows you to create quality metrics based on the selected requirements rules. Choose among the different libraries offered by The REUSE Company, tailor the rules to your specific needs, and even create your own custom rules when needed.
Second, think about the structure that every requirement should follow. This is normally known as the Requirements pattern. Catalogs of patterns such as EARS - the Easy Approach to Requirements Syntax, the MASTER Patterns by Sophist, those now included in the INCOSE Guide to Writing Requirements, include a series of patterns, made up of a sequence of building blocks or pattern slots.

Final step, open the RQA - QUALITY Studio, or the SES ENGINEERING Studio to see the full document as a whole. Thus, you can apply the CCC Approach (Correctness, Consistency, and Completeness). Identify inconsistencies among your requirements, or between your requirements and your models. Find duplicates. Identify which are the most challenging quality rules, and get tips to improve. Generate quality reports, and watch the evolution of the quality of your requirements.
