Dr Alexander N Schmidt-Lebuhn

Alexander studied at the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he obtained his Ph.D. with work on the South American genus Minthostachys (Lamiaceae). After postdocs in Halle-Wittenberg and Zürich, he joined CSIRO in 2010.

Alexander's main research interests are the phylogenetics, taxonomy and biogeography of Asteraceae (daisy family) and user-friendly identification tools including the application of image classification through machine learning. He has also worked on the impact of polyploidy and breeding systems on conservation management in rare plant species and contributed his phylogenetic and taxonomic expertise to biological control research conducted by his colleagues in CSIRO Health & Biosecurity.

Alexander is leading the Plant Systematics and Population Genetics Team at the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra. He currently heads the Phylogenomics-Bioinformatics Working Group in GAP and CSIRO's contribution to Australian Angiosperm Tree of Life phase 1. He is on the editorial team of Capitulum, the journal of TICA, The International Compositae Alliance (i.e. the global society of daisy researchers).
