Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — in simple terms — is a mental health condition where a person feels excessive, uncontrollable worry or anxiety about everyday things for at least 6 months or more, even when there is little or no reason to worry.

Persistent and excessive worry about various aspects of life (health, family, work, finances, etc.)

The anxiety feels hard to control and is often out of proportion to the situation.

Physical symptoms are common.

1. Psychological symptoms:

Constant fear or worry

Feeling restless or “on edge”

Difficulty concentrating

Irritability


2. Physical symptoms:

Muscle tension or body aches

Fatigue (feeling tired easily)

Headache, sweating, nausea, or rapid heartbeat

Genetic factors (family history of anxiety)

Imbalance in brain chemicals (like serotonin, dopamine, GABA)

🔹 Diagnosis

A doctor or psychiatrist diagnoses GAD using criteria from the DSM-5, mainly:

Excessive anxiety or worry for at least 6 months

Difficulty controlling the worry

At least 3 or more of the above symptoms (in adults)
