"This is a city under siege. They may have the army, they may have the weapons, they have the force and the brutality, but we have the will, we have the cause, we have the right. And this is the something they can never defeat - the Palestinian will to resist, to be free, to gain our liberation and it starts from Jerusalem."

STORYLINE:

Violent scuffles broke out between Israeli police and demonstrators protesting at the occupation by Israeli security forces of Orient House, the unofficial Palestinian headquarters in East Jerusalem on Monday.

Police on horseback moved in to try to control an increasingly angry crowd as sporadic violence erupted in the streets outside Orient House.

Men, women and television crews all came under attack as violence flared between both sides and ten people were arrested.

Israel has not said how long it would remain in the building.

Police said Monday the closure order was good for six months, but could be extended.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, meanwhile, permitted Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to resume contacts with senior Palestinian officials, despite two suicide bombings by Islamic militants over four days.

Sharon instructed Peres not to conduct peace negotiations, and the foreign minister will need special approval to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
