The Warm Up: I was in Sparks a few days ago and saw this freight train leave. I tried to get to it at Waltham Way, but couldn't get far enough ahead in time (editorial: Drivers...camp in the woods, not the left lane, please!) so I went ahead to Painted Rock Road. If you follow my Instagram (tracksidethomas84), this train was in my live video.

The Chase: The first trip of the fall felt in some cases more like summer. Beautiful skies and warm temperatures. As luck usually has it, I arrived in Doyle, CA mid morning to see the old WP aspect lit up red on the north end of town for an approaching westbound. Sure enough, within about 10 minutes, some lights appeared in the distance. It was an autorack/intermodal...the chase was on according to plan!

I stopped at some familiar spots...Reno Junction and Pointy Rock Road. I wanted to catch a run by at Constantia Road, but was stuck behind a slow semi and camper. The train stopped in Portola for about 20 minutes. I tried to beat it to the Clio Trestle, but alas, was just a few seconds too late. When I arrived in Spring Garden, the rube that I am, didn't realize that was a loop.

I arrived at the Keddie Wye about 15 minutes before the train. I heard the bell and the horn, and watched it pass over the UP leg of the wye before I made my way back to Reno.
