Long Hike to Find Mine Locations, Tower City, PA

Today I made a 10 miles hike in Tower City vicinity to find and film locations of abandoned buildings belonged West Brookside Colliery. As usual, I was lucky to choose the worst weather for the hike, but it was too late to go back.

The West Brookside Colliery was originally opened by a slope sunk 442 feet in 1868. It was purchased by Repplier & Company and operated until 1873.

By 1879, the surface openings consisted of one tunnel and three slopes and on the inside workings were six planes and seven main gangways. The total production from 1875 to 1879 was 1,382,083 tons – the largest production of coal by any colliery in America or Europe.

The West Brookside Colliery was closed and abandoned on August 26, 1938 during the Great Depression.
