The Indian Navy has initiated the process of identifying industry partners for Project-76, India’s first fully indigenous conventional (diesel-electric) submarine program. This landmark initiative marks a major step toward self-reliance in underwater warfare and defence manufacturing.
As the final design phase progresses in partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Navy is preparing to onboard proven domestic companies for critical systems and subsystems. Drawing on decades of experience from the SSBN program and Kalvari-class (Project-75) Scorpene submarines, India now possesses a mature ecosystem capable of delivering complex submarine technologies.
Once Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) clearance is granted, tenders will be issued for various subsystems, enabling a streamlined and efficient development process. The first Project-76 submarine is expected to feature 70–75% indigenous content, with subsequent boats incorporating even higher levels of local systems and technologies.
Project-76 is set to involve 1,500–2,000 small, medium, and large suppliers, creating a vast industrial network and significantly boosting India’s defence manufacturing base. Several private companies have already initiated independent R&D efforts in anticipation of the program, highlighting the growing depth of India’s submarine industrial capabilities.
With progressive localization, iterative upgrades, and strong private-sector collaboration, Project-76 positions India on the path to complete autonomy in conventional submarine design and production, strengthening the Indian Navy’s future underwater fleet.
