Nestled in the northern inner suburbs of Melbourne, this garden has come a long way since Ting and Hanas first viewed its overgrown yard, with just fruit trees present. Two years ago, the couple saw potential, whereas others saw neglect. They started on a DIY journey to breathe life into the space, turning it into a productive and inspiring garden.

Using every inch of growing space, Ting and Hanas' cleverly use vertical structures for growing climbers such as Malabar spinach and Chokos. DIY tomato frames made from bundled sticks are a sustainable way to grow climbing plants whilst adding to the garden’s charm. A green wall along the driveway covers the bare timber fence, which is simply made using reo mesh for growing support.

The property's heavy clay soil makes it challenging to grow vegetables. So, Ting and Hana built large, raised vegetable beds to combat this. These are filled with homemade compost and chook manure from their own chooks. We love how chock-a-block they are!

Hanas's transformation of an old cubby house into a dual-bin compost system is another example of one of the practical and creative solutions they've used to complement their garden.

It’s not just a productive garden, though. The backyard has a Cottage garden vibe, with traditional perennial borders filled with flowers and grasses. Ting has a “thing for grasses” and loves the movement they add to a garden with their soft, wafting seed heads, especially when mixed with pretty perennials.

Wherever you stand in this garden, you can see a lush, abundant atmosphere—a testament to Ting and Hanas's vision, care, and nurturing of their space.
