Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is a 2001 open world platform video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the Sony PlayStation 2, released on December 3rd 2001, as the first game of the Jak and Daxter series.

The game follows the protagonist, a young boy named Jak, as he tries to help his friend Daxter after he is transformed into an ottsel; (a fictional hybrid of an otter and a weasel) with the help of Samos the Sage, a master of the mysterious energy called 'Eco' created by an ancient race known as the Precursors.

Jak and Daxter the Precursor Legacy was another one of the first games I ever played; and although the gameplay may be considered simple by some today, it's a case of quality over quantity.

The platforming/mechanics may be simple but they are robust, and are the main reason why the game has always been fun to play. Again I would recommend watching a speed run to see how far the movement can be pushed as it is definitely deeper than first expected. I think a big part of the reason the movement feels so good is the incredible animation work done by the developers, that showcases superb attention to detail. A good example of this is the different poses and animations Daxter does when Jak is moving around the world and jumping, swimming, attacking etc. Its a case of one of those things that is in no way necessary, but once you notice it it adds to the character of the game.

Another feature that made this game feel very unique is the lack of loading screens, as you could theoretically go from the very start of the game to the end and shouldn't encounter and loading. Although some loading is cleverly hidden with elevators or boats etc. This always makes the game feel like one seamless environment that was designed as a world to explore rather than a separate series of levels. This is something I wish more games tried to do as I feel like it really adds to a sense of immersion and can really help the pacing of games in some cases.

I am using the RPCS3 emulator to play the HD re-release at 1440p. I haven't noticed any bugs and the performance is rock solid even at higher resolutions, apart from a bit of a dip in frames in a couple of areas when looking at a bigger vista and when auto saving. But these could also happen when playing on the PS3 so it isn't down to the emulator. So again thank you to the amazing RPCS3 team and the work they do to make sure these games can still be enjoyed today.
