The countershaft is ONLY required if you are also adding a kickstart. Personally, even if you don't plan to add a kick starter right now, I think you should replace the countershaft for two reasons. (1) You may want to install a kick starter later and if you already have the correct shaft, it will only take an hour to install the rest of the components. (2) The XR600/XR650L splines wear down fast if you're not using the Fritz or Primary Drive sprockets. Get those fresh splines on there.
