Iron Dome is a mobile all-weather air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries.

Iron Dome is a multi-mission system capable of intercepting rockets, artillery, mortars and Precision Guided Munitions like very short range air defence (V-SHORAD) systems as well as aircraft, helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) over short ranges of up to 70 km.

The Iron Dome system began operating in early 2011, initially deployed at air force bases in southern Israel. It was designated to be set up in other areas, such as the town of Sderot, during significant escalations along the Gaza border.

It's pretty costly

Each battery reportedly costs $100 million dollars, and each interceptor missile around $50,000. All this, while the rockets it detonates only cost a few hundred dollars to produce.

Iron Dome is an autonomous guidance and control system capable of intercepting specific targets which represent a high-priority threat according to the system configuration.
