About this video: This video is complete guide on how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft 1.21. Why would you want to add more RAM to Minecraft 1.21? Well, Minecraft Java Edition is a very RAM intensive game. Because of that, it is common that Minecraft will lag or even crash because it doesn’t have enough RAM dedicated to it. Luckily, you have found this video on how to give Minecraft more RAM in Java Edition 1.21. This means you can prevent these issues and stop lag and crashes potentially before they even start!

Starting off, we should go over the different amounts of RAM you need for Minecraft depending on what you are doing in-game. Start off, Vanilla Minecraft 1.21 only needs at maximum 4GB of RAM dedicated to it. Generally, even less RAM can be used, and by default, Vanilla Minecraft has 2GB of RAM dedicated to it.

This will quickly start changing when you start adding mods though. We are going to give you some general guidance as to how much RAM to dedicate to Minecraft depending on the amount of mods you have. However, some mods are more resource intensive than others. These are generally mods that add in new dimensions, biomes, or entities. So in certain cases, you may need more RAM even if you have less mods than the amount we list.

If you have less than 50 mods, generally, you are okay with around 4GB of RAM. This is super dependent on the mods you have install though, so don’t be afraid to add more RAM if you can.

Once you go over 50 mods until you reach about 100 mods, 6GB of RAM can be good in order to reduce crashing and provide good performance.

From 100-250 mods, 8GB of RAM is typically needed. Adding this much RAM to Minecraft 1.21 will give the mods a lot of room to store data and complete functions.

Large modpacks with over 250 mods often need 10GB of RAM or more dedicated to them in order to run without occasional crashes or lag. Larger modpacks will sometimes even make their own specific RAM recommendations.

With that outlined though, it is also worth noting that you should never have more than half of the total RAM on your computer dedicated to Minecraft. You can see how much RAM your computer has in the “System Information” app. For example, a computer with 16GB of RAM should never add more than 8GB of RAM to Minecraft.

How do you allocate more RAM to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 though? Well, open up the Minecraft Launcher and click the “Installations” tab and the top. Then, hover over the Minecraft Installation you want to add more RAM, click the three dots and click “Edit”.

Click then “More Options” pop down and you will see a “JVM Arguments” box. In this, there will be “-Xmx2G” at the beginning. The number could be different. The number in that string is the amount of RAM Minecraft has dedicated to it. For example, changing this to “-Xmx4G” dedicates 4GB of RAM to Minecraft 1.21. “-Xmx10G” would add 10GB of RAM to Minecraft.

Click “Save” on the installation when you are done and play Minecraft with it. In-game you can press the F3 key on your keyboard and see the amount of RAM dedicated to Minecraft in the top right. You can also see the amount of RAM that Minecraft 1.21 is using!

With that, you now know how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21. If you have any issues adding more RAM to Minecraft Java 1.21, let us know in the comments. We will try to help you out.
