Someone with no experience or training can claim to be an appliance repair person.

Almost every service industry is regulated and has competency testing and licensing to protect you as a consumer, but not appliances.

Think of a new car, you know you can get service because the dealers are required by the manufacturer to service the vehicles. That is not the case with appliances.

Manufacturers focus on selling their products and don't require dealers to service. They view warranty repair as a cost to be minimized so they pay very low rates to servicers for warranty work.

This has created a race to the bottom that leaves you as the customer dealing with substandard repairs and unqualified technicians in your home.

Most appliance stores no longer have their own appliance repair technicians because they don't want to deal with the trouble or the cost. They might tell you to call a 1-800 number and you've probably experienced how frustrating that can be.

Even worse there are rarely background checks in appliance repair so you may have a criminal in your home. Since the cost of doing service is so high, many of the companies that do still have their own appliance repair technicians don't properly train them and resource them with everything they need to be a professional and successful repair technician.

There are many stories of repairmen taking advantage of customers.

Online searches for appliance repair companies will bring up someone's home or a wrong address and a lot of the pictures they show you aren't of the actual company or people who will be coming out to your home.

How does a consumer protect themselves?

Only buy your appliances from a respected and trusted dealer who provides repair with their own full-time service technicians who are authorized by the manufacturers. Pay attention to the reputation and the quality of that company because the only guarantee you're going to have of the quality of the technician coming to your home is the reputation of the company they represent.

Appliance repair is only getting worse. It's easy to be the cheapest but it's very hard to be the best.
