This instructional video will give you a good idea of what it takes to replace the timing chain and guides on a non-VANOS M62 BMW engine. The car in the video had a failed reversing rail. The car still ran fine but made an awful metal on metal noise. If you have pulled your lower oil pan and found bits of plastic timing chain guide, then it is time to do this on your BMW! Don't wait until the chain breaks!

3:58 REMOVE VALVE COVER.
4:35 REMOVE ALL FOUR OIL LINES. FIVE 10MM NUTS EACH.
5:10 REMOVE EIGHT 13 MM VIBRATION DAMPER BOLTS.
5:41 REMOVE FOUR 10 MM WATER PUMP PULLY BOLTS.
7:48 REMOVE BELT TENSIONER.
7:56 REMOVE T50 BOLT.
8:15 REMOVE TWO 13MM BOLTS.
8:26 REMOVE SIX 10MM WATER PUMP BOLTS.
8:42 REMOVE WATER PUMP.
8:54 REMOVE THREE 13MM ALTERNATOR BOLTS.
9:18 REMOVE T30 CAM SENSOR BOLT.
10:01 REMOVE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER.
10:40 REMOVE SIX 10MM UPPER TIMING CASE BOLTS.
12:14 REATTACH OIL PUMP CHAIN COVER.
12:36 MM NUT ON REAR OF POWER STEERING PUMP.
13:53 ATTACH CAM LOCKING TOOL TO THE REAR OF THE CAMSHAFTS.
14:04 USING A PAINT PEN, CREATE TIMING MARKS ON THE TIMING CHAIN, CAM SPROCKETS, AND CRANK.
15:07 REMOVE CAM SPROCKET.
15:25 REMOVE TIMING CHAIN.
15:47 REMOVE FIVE E10 REVERSING RAIL BOLTS.
16:34 REMOVE GUIDE RAIL
16:51 INSTALL NEW REVERSING RAIL.
17:05 TORQUE REVERSING RAIL BOLTS TO 10 FT-LB (14NM).
18:06 INSTALL NEW GUIDE RAIL.
19:13 INSTALL NEW TIMING CHAIN LINING UP TIMING MARKS.
20:20 INSTALL PREVIOUSLY REMOVED CAM SPROCKET
21:15 INSTALL CAM SENSOR WHEEL TORQUE BOLTS TO 11 FT-LB (15NM).
22:07 INSTALL LOWER TIMING CASE.
22:44 INSTALL BOLTS CONNECTING THE UPPER OIL PAN TO THE LOWER TIMING CASE.
23:32 INSTALL NEW O-RING ON THERMOSTAT.
23:39 INSTALL THERMOSTAT
23:54 INSTALL NEW O-RINGS
