How to support children communication and language through a healthy eating activity .

Communication and language forms the foundation of the seven areas of children’s communication skills as when children engage with their parents, peers and key persons they not only form friendships and connections but also build on their vocabulary and speech and language development. It is therefore pertinent that practitioner support children’s language development through consistent interactions during activities and when supporting children’s to meet their personal care needs and as they establish a sense of self. Babies and toddlers can be supported in their early language development through repetition, and interactions for example through gestures by pointing at an object the child is interested in ; for example if it’s a cup , you could say “ You’ve got the cup” whilst pointing at the object in their hand which would tune the direction and attention of the child towards the object. Constant repetition of the word “cup” would reinforce the learning intent and goal to be achieved.

This video is dedicated to practitioners and parents, grandparents or carers in supporting children to gain an understanding of the world around them and about helping them to have a good sense of themselves(PSED).
How do we support this ? We can support children’s language development theough the use of traditional nursery songs and rhymes such as “Pick banana,🍌 , pick pick banana; in the garden we can see many things, jelly on the plate , hot cross buns , five fat sausages, to reinforce the theme on healthy eating for children within the setting, “Johnny, Johnny yes papa etc. These will help children to engage through repetition of sounds and words which will reinforce their speech development. The early years particularly from the zero to 3 years are significant as during these period, chidren’s brain development and quest to learn is mostly active ; therefore practitioners need to ensure that they support children in their holistic learning and development.
