Surma river derives from the Barak River. Coming from northeast India, the Barak River divides at the Bangladesh border into Surma (northern branch) and Kushiyara river (southern branch). Surma River is one of the major rivers in Bangladesh. As a part of the Surma-Meghna River System, it receives several rivers and streams and passes through many haors. It ends in Kishoreganj District, where Surma and Kushiyara rejoin to form the Meghna River. Length of this flood prone river is about 559 miles. Its average depth is 86 meters and maximum depth is 170 meters.
