Ponniyin Selvan review by Sucharita Tyagi - Based on what’s considered the greatest novel ever written in Tamil literature of the same name Ponniyin Selvan starts with an animation plus aimed-directly-at-viewers voice over sequence, a style of exposition dumping joh recent filmon mein kaafi dekhne mila. Shamshera, Brahmastra, Vikram Vedha to name a few…ekdum hi new ones. While yeh visual tool thoda listless hota hai when used like this completely disconnected from the movie that follows it, par agar Mani Ratnam ne istemaal kiya hai, reason toh hoga.

The reason becomes abundantly clear in the next 20 minutes, as I realized ki jitni madad milegi, sab lagegi, to follow and comprehend exactly what is going on.
Not everyone who has watched and loved the Lord Of the Rings movies, has read the books. Par pehli film pehli baar dkehte hi itna zaroor clear ho gaya tha ki jitni bhi fantasy fiction kahaaniyan western literature mein iske baad kahi gayi, sab LOTR inspire thi hi thi. Yahaan without having read the books, PS 1 second half mein jaakar shayad samajh mein aaye, unless Mani Ratnam turns up on zoom, with a flowchart, movie ke interval mein.
