About This View

This camera is positioned 7.2 km southwest of the active Caliente cone, offering a rare vantage point of Santiaguito that reveals features often hidden from the more common eastern viewpoints.

Below the dome complex lies a vast, rugged lava flow field—a broad accumulation of overlapping blocky lava flows that have advanced from the Caliente vent over many decades.

The closest visible edge of this flow field is 3.7 km from the camera.
These thick, slow-moving dacite flows build a steep, rubbly platform of cooled lava, ash, and collapse debris.
Newer lava lobes occasionally inflate and shed block-and-ash avalanches down the same southwest pathways visible in this livestream.

This camera angle clearly reveals the architecture of the Caliente dome, the structure of the lava flow field below it, and the canyons where pyroclastic flows and lahars often descend.
