STORYLINE
Thailand''s newly appointed prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, flew to Jakarta on Monday to meet her Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, for bilateral talks.
After a welcoming ceremony at the State Palace, Shinawatra and Yudhoyono held talks on areas of mutual interest including trade and regional security, agreeing to strengthen relations.
Speaking at a joint news conference, Shinawatra said they held "fruitful discussions" on bilateral, regional and multilateral issues.
Yudhoyono also told reporters Indonesia was committed to help his Thai counterpart combat the problem of insurgency in Thailand''s violence-plagued south.
"We support the political and peaceful measures to resolve the problem there," he told reporters.
More than 4,700 people have been killed in the country''s Muslim-dominated southern provinces since an Islamist insurgency flared in 2004.
Shinawatra was elected Thailand''s first female prime minister and took office in August.
