"We don't have fridges or air conditioning units or hygienic conditions on our trains. We have health problems due to the chairs, the vibrations and so on. We want the state freight railway company to remain state owned. Privatisation should mean the modernisation of the trains in the first place not selling the company for nothing. We consider that this sale wouldn't help us at all, on the contrary. Rights will be diminished and it will be worse for us. We won't be happy at all."

"What really upsets us is that the privatisation would mean layoffs, the shortening of the working schedule, worse working conditions. Everything has been cut. The salaries are the same, blocked five years ago and so on."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of railway workers rallied in Bucharest on Thursday to protest against plans to privatise the ailing national railway company and demand better work conditions.
Demonstrators gathered outside the transport ministry and marched to the government headquarters in the Romanian capital.
Unions are angry that some workers will be put on a four-day week to reduce spending and that the government plans to sell the debt-saddled freight operator to satisfy demands from the International Monetary Fund.
Train mechanic Barbulescu Barbu complained of the poor conditions on board with no fridges or air conditioning and poor quality seating.
"Privatisation should mean the modernisation of the trains in the first place not selling the company for nothing. We consider that this sale wouldn't help us at all, on the contrary. Rights will be diminished and it will be worse for us. We won't be happy at all," he said.
"What really upsets us is that the privatisation would mean layoffs, the shortening of the working schedule, worse working conditions," said technician Marius Dumitras.
Last year, 1,100 Romanian railway workers were laid off.
