I recently watched the Sean Combs Diddy Documentary was struck by the younger photos of his mother, Janice  Combs. And thought she perfectly illustrated one of the three aging trajectories I’ve recently mentioned. She currently has a signficantly different gaze when she was younger. You can often tell a lot about someone’s level of awareness, presence and mental acuity based on their gaze in photos. When she was younger, it was sharp and aware, what I call a long gaze, which is where it feels as if the person is looking thru you in the photo. Yet as she’s gotten older it has become extremely short otherwise known as a distant stare. I’ve always found her attractive, yet for as long as I can remember, every time I see her she looks checked‑out, so to speak.
Often she appears as though she’s under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Her current look isn’t just aging—it’s the result of decades of unresolved trauma and a reluctance to self‑reflect.Those heavy eyelids are a reflection of the weight of unresolved pain on her spirit, most likely amplified by self‑medication to dodge introspection.People who habitually avoid responsibility tend to slip into cognitive decline, becoming prime candidates for Alzheimer’s or dementia. In short, they check out mentally before their bodies can keep up.
