You don’t have to have loads of cash to buy stocks anymore! You can start investing today with as little as $1 with Fidelity’s fractional share feature. And if you only want sell a part of your Tesla, Apple, or Amazon shares just to get enough green to cover the bills or to buy those Christmas gifts…you can!

Keep in mind that Fidelity only rolled this out on their mobile app, so you’ll need to buy stocks using your phone or a tablet. One downside to the app is that any orders you place for fractional shares are only valid for that day. If it doesn’t get filled, it’ll auto-cancel at the end of the day. The other negative is that they only let you place fractional share orders during trading hours (9:30 AM - 4:00 PM EST during business days, not including holidays).

Other than that, the feature works great! Most brokers require you to buy full shares and the only way to buy shares at a “dollar” amount before was to invest in index and mutual funds. But now that this feature rolled out, you can take advantage of real-time pricing on ETFs too! Fidelity’s got one of the best fractional share options and works great if you’re buying stocks with either your traditional/Roth IRAs or a regular brokerage account!
