In order to proactively anticipate this uncertain future amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, the New York Forum Institute (NYF-Institute) organized a high-level virtual roundtable on May 19, 2020, between African leaders and international experts. It is the first of its kind: gathering African heads of state and governments who have shown exemplary leadership.

Our event highlighted the lessons the world can learn from Africa, address the socioeconomic risks, and explore visions for the world post-health crisis.

Five African heads of state spoke at the event: H.E. Dr. Julius Maada BIO, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, H.E. Mahamadou ISSOUFOU, President of the Republic of Niger, H.E. Hon. Uhuru KENYATTA, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Alassane OUATTARA, President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, and H.E. Macky SALL, President of the Republic of Senegal.

Other distinguished speakers included: H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Amadou Hott, Minister of the Economy, Planning and International Cooperation of the Republic of Senegal, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, Chairman, Heirs Holdings, United Bank for Africa Group (UBA Group), and Transcorp Limited; and Founder, The Tony Elumelu Foundation, Dr. Acha Leke, Senior Partner and Chairman of McKinsey Africa, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Special Envoy of the African Union on COVID-19; Board Chair, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Dr. Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. At the conclusion, Angelique Kidjo performed "Afirika."
