"Personal impact is a big thing isn't it?" Neil Mullarkey asked the London Business Forum. The event took place at The Comedy Store where Mullarkey takes to the stage every Wednesday and Sunday night as one of Britain's top improv troupe, The Comedy Store Players. The skills used in improvisational comedy, he argued, are useful in improving the impact and influence we have on others especially in business.

Organisations, suggested Mullarkey, are "a series of interactive communications." Much like improv, decisions are made and actions are taken based on the social interactions that happen, such as talking to colleagues, clients or suppliers. We are all playing our role in the world, he told the LBF, and must be aware of how what we do is interpreted by others. "The meaning of a gesture is in the response," he said, quoting George Herbert Mead, one of the founders of social psychology.

Using improv, Mullarkey offered "Ten Tweaks to Your Toolbox" that will improve the impact we have on those around us. Memorably they all begin with L: Logisitics, Learn, Look, Listen, Link, Let, Lighten, Like, Limbs and Leave Well....
